Ruckus GY6 Swap Harness: A Review

The information presented in this article are purely our thoughts and opinions and not paid or sponsored by any product reviewed.

The Ruckus GY6 Swap harness is one of the core essential components needed when doing a Honda Ruckus GY6 150cc swap. The importance of the harness is that it ties in the stock ruckus controls to the electronics of the GY6 150cc motor as well as being tailored to the correct length and connection points of the Ruckus. You can't simply bolt up a GY6 150cc motor and expect it to turn on and run, it needs to be connected to something! This is why time needs to be taken to decide which harness to choose when doing a Ruckus GY6 swap. There are many variables to consider, price, ease of use, reliability, etc and in this article we share with you our experiences and opinions about a few Ruckus GY6 harness out there...

ATR GY6 Engine Swap Harness - $169

This is a bulletproof GY6 wiring harness that is as stated to be "95% plug and play" and at a great price point too. It has also been on the ruckus market for the last decade so it's proven to work. It is a completely new harness that replaces the stock Ruckus harness and ECU brain. Every plug is labeled and has the appropriate plug that will connect directly to the stock Ruckus components as well as extra power wires for accessories (fuel gauge, etc). We have had extensive experience with this harness on several GY6 builds. It installs easy, good quality construction, and reliable. It ties in pretty much every single stock component, has fuel and high beam indicator functionality, and allows for 6 pole to 11 pole stator usage. Overall, it makes for a great swap harness if you want a cost effective, easy to install, and flexibility.

Parts Shop Maxx GY6 Engine Harness - $129

This is another one of those GY6 swap harnesses that have been out in the market for years. It is very similar to the ATR GY6 harness in that it completely replaces the stock wiring and ECU. The main difference is the way the electronics are setup and in a way simpler, there aren't as many wires and connection points which make for less connections to fail. The downside of the harness is that it is less plug and play and very few of the wires have OEM plugs installed, so you will need to cut splice or solder your connections. This would be a harness for the more experienced builder but we have personally found it to be very reliable and clean since it has less wiring. Being open-ended, the harness is also great if you want to get creatively with your wiring or looking to do more of an "exotic" setup.

BDX Plug-n-Play Ruckus GY6 Harness - N/A

This harness is beefy and you will pay for it too...heavy duty wiring, multiple fuse points, and relays takes fail safe to a whole new level. Its very tailor made meaning every single wire is the exact length to where it needs to be on the Ruck. It also features a mid frame disconnect so you don't need to pull the whole harness if you are disassembling your ruck. The downside, lots of wires, extra components to work with, and the high price point. We personally have never used this harness and probably won't as it has been off of the market for some point.

Rolling Wrench GY6 Ruckus Engine Wiring Harness - $329.00

This is relatively new harness to the Ruckus swap market. The main selling point being it uses the existing stock Ruckus harness to run the GY6 motor. This is good because you get to keep and use all of the factory wiring and controls and boasts as a 20 min install. But at a price that is double the proven ATR and Parts Shop Maxx GY6 harnesses and includes considerable less wiring and connectors doesn't quite justify the price for a budget minded build. We have no doubt that it works and will make for an easy install but with a kit where you are reusing existing wiring and paying for less components shouldn't necessary equate to a higher price. We personally feel more comfortable completely using a new harness that is more dedicated to run a GY6 motor rather than modifying the stock harness and ECU which wasn't originally intended to run a Chinese motor. Plus, when you remove the stock Ruckus harness and ECU you can either sell it or use it on another build which adds value to old parts.

Conclusion:

We personally have had much experience using the ATR and Parts Shop Maxx GY6 swap harness. Its price point, ease of use, and reliability have kept us coming back to them build after build. Again, this article was for the purpose of reviewing and expressing our opinions regarding GY6 Swap Harnesses. Whichever swap harness you choose to use on your Ruckus GY6 swap, we hope you find this information helpful. Ride Hard!
